Broom Stays in Alabama

The top-ranked player in the state of Alabama decides to stay close to home with a commitment to play for the University of South Alabama.

6-foot-5 guard John Broom of Jacksonville High had one the best season a junior could have, averaging 20 points, pulling down six rebounds, and dished off five assists a game, leading his team to a 4A state title.

Broom picked up an offer from South Alabama and many others just days after his monstrous performance in the playoffs, but what made this school the top choice?

“The loyalty the coaches had towards my family and me won us over,” Broom said. “They showed me a lot of love, texting me and calling me every day.”

Broom says the feeling of finally committing to a school felt amazing, and his relationship with the coaching staff is solid as well.

“My relationship with the coaching staff is amazing; we talk to each other pretty much every day,” he said.

He led his team through most of the season and has showcased his solid facilitating skills and crafty ball handling throughout the summer. Broom has improved more on creating space for his shot and taking those bumps to finish through contact.

But what can he bring to the Jaguars?

“I feel I can bring toughness, energy, leadership, and be a consistent shot maker,” Broom said.

The commitment has been made, and the next thing on Broom’s agenda is to workout every day and get stronger and work on his skills with his jump shot and attacks to the basket.
